Another health crisis—swine flu—is looming over the city Delhi

At a time when Delhi is grappling with a sudden spike in dengue cases, another health crisis—swine flu—is looming over the city.

Public health experts say viruses proliferate the most during winter and people should be cautious about prolonged cough, fever and chest infection—the classic symptoms of swine flu.

Swine flu or H1N1 influenza was at its most virulent form when it initially spread in 2009. Though doctors say most people have developed immunity to the virus, there are concerns that its mutation could lead to more cases. Many parts of the country, for example Ahmedabad, have reported an upsurge in swine flu cases over the past few weeks.

Doctors said preventive vaccination is recommended for the elderly and those suffering from co-morbidities such as diabetes. "Our government is prepared to deal with any possible disease outbreak or upsurge in swine flu cases. We have more than one lakh capsules and syrups of Oseltamivir (Tamiflu/Fluvir). If required more capsules and syrups can be purchased," said a senior official.
